A relocation roadmap for the first German chapter

A practical stage-by-stage roadmap for skilled professionals moving to Germany, from job documents to the first months.

Establish the route and authority

Start with the facts that shape everything else: nationality, profession, signed employment terms, salary, intended city, and accompanying family. Use official German mission, federal portal, and local immigration authority sources to identify the likely residence process. A likely route is not an approval.

Record document spelling differences early. Check whether your profession is regulated and whether qualification recognition is a separate prerequisite.

Build a document inventory

List your passport validity, employment contract, degree or vocational evidence, civil-status certificates, insurance evidence, and accommodation documents. Mark where an original, translation, apostille, or certified copy may be requested—but confirm before commissioning expensive work.

Keep secure digital backups apart from the originals. Avoid emailing full identity records to services that do not need them.

Plan an address, not just a bed

Short-term accommodation may be comfortable without supporting Anmeldung. Ask the provider directly whether they will issue the required housing-provider confirmation. Understand notice periods, deposits, furnished-rental terms, and the reality that housing searches in Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, and other pressured cities can outlast an initial booking.

Align insurance and arrival

Health insurance is mandatory in Germany, but the correct path depends on employment, earnings, previous coverage, and household details. Obtain advice from a qualified insurer or independent specialist where needed. Coordinate the effective date and evidence with employment and residence requirements.

Prepare registration and residence appointments

Municipal registration and immigration are distinct processes. Read your city’s current appointment guidance, gather the listed evidence, and save copies of confirmations. Never assume a procedure described for Berlin applies unchanged in Cologne or Leipzig.

Settle the first working month

Track your tax identification notice, payroll questions, bank access, broadcasting contribution correspondence, and any required licence exchange. Place official letters in one folder and note response dates. Add family tasks—childcare, school contact, spouse insurance, pet registration—to the same calendar.

Review after ninety days

Check permit conditions and expiry, probation dates, insurance records, address records, and unresolved qualification steps. Learn what changes must be reported if you move home, change employer, or alter working arrangements.

This roadmap is orientation, not a universal application list. Choose a consultation for a sequence prepared around your facts, or send a focused question.
