Health insurance before the first German working day
Questions skilled employees should resolve about German health insurance before employment and residence appointments.
Begin with eligibility, not a brand comparison
Germany has statutory and private health insurance systems. Your options can be shaped by employment, gross earnings, prior insurance, profession, and other circumstances. A spouse or child may have a related but not identical route.
Before choosing, establish the intended employment start and whether the employer needs membership evidence for payroll. If residence paperwork requires proof, ask what format and effective date the responsible mission or authority accepts.
Questions worth asking an insurer
- On what date does coverage become effective?
- What evidence can be issued before the employment starts?
- How are accompanying family members treated?
- What happens if the employment or arrival date moves?
- Are there waiting periods, exclusions, or contribution consequences relevant to this situation?
- Which statements require a full application rather than an informal quote?
Keep written answers. Do not cancel existing coverage until you understand the transition and any gap risk.
Travel cover is not a universal substitute
Travel insurance can be relevant during a journey or limited interim period, but it should not automatically be treated as equivalent to German statutory or qualifying private coverage for employment and residence purposes. Confirm the exact requirement with the receiving authority and insurer.
Coordinate four dates
Place intended entry, accommodation start, employment start, and insurance start on one page. If they do not align, ask explicit questions before departure. A certificate that begins too late or reflects a superseded date can create avoidable correspondence.
Health-insurance selection can involve regulated financial advice. Kernel Synclab helps place the task in your relocation sequence; an insurer or qualified independent adviser must assess products and eligibility.
